12/0 or 14/0 ?and also where to find spare parts
The actual Penn factory is probaly not the best place to order parts, I have been rebuilding Penn reels since I was 14 and started out with the two most widely used reels back in the day the Squidder and the 4/0 Special friendly named the red 4/0 and I'm 51, and a few reels later.

I have purchased parts from Penn, Scott's, Dave's parts, from Junior's (it burned down in a fire from it's South Beach location) and from Geeno at Harry's. IMO the worse place to purchase parts is from Penn, slow shipping and lots of back order items or no longer in producion, the best place with the largest stock is Scott's, they bought a lot of stock of parts no lonegr available from Penn.
As far as having some one else service your reels, you would probably do a more detailed job than some one else 'cause it's your own reel.
If you need or would like to learn more about reels, you might want to take a look at Alan Tani's website/forum at http://alantani.com/ I instal a number of his Kolekar handles in costumers reels, he also makes some nice gear sleeves for Jigmaster/Squiders.Next week I will be doing a break down and build up of the new Accurate Extreme Boss BX2-500 and a 600 in Mean Green special color, Ed at Baja Fish Gear sent me a 500 and 600 for promotion, I'll post the build up in another forum, I do not know if it would be okay to post it in this forum, I do not want to derail from shark fishing.
Good fishing, Art.
I bought the modified drags from Alan Tani, how good are they? I have installed them but not used them yet for the 900H?

I think you must be referring to the Daiwa Sealine 900H, BTW - great reel, no offense but the 900H is far superior in quality to the equivalent Penn product (the 9/0) except one thing the Sealine comes with petty crappy drag washers, you purchased from Alan the actual Penn HT-100's, the 900H with the HT-100's is greatly improved.

Yep that's what I heard, the 900h weakness is it's sticky drags!Yea the Ht-100's are from a 12/0 going from a 3 stack drag system to 5, he says going from 20lbs of drag to 30-35, I will be testing it out this summer!
14/0 it were its at. The 16/0 has more line capacity but is way to expensive. Yea the 14 is heavy yea the 14 is clunkirr than some of the smaller reels. But if your gonna complain about how heavy your gear is you should stop fishing now. Because when Mr. 14 foot hammer comes by and grabs the bait on your 12/0 ur gonna wish you had something bigger.
I go with the bigger is better mentality as well. I had a shark put a hurting on my 12/0 last year. I thought I was going to get spooled until my 80lb test broke on a sandbar. This year I am going with a 14/0 loaded to the brim with bullbuster 125lb
good choice my friend I saluteyou ![]()
For sharks of Floridian size...bigger is always better..not to say the 12/0 cant get the job done..id just use my soulmate of a 14/0 over a 12/0 anyday...but here soon I will get a 12/0 so I can round out my arsenal a bit...but my goal here isn't to bash the 12/0 or make the people who don't yet have a 14/0 yet feel undergunned because trust me I always hated that feeling...I'm just stating that if going after that giant hammer its just common sense to go with the biggest reel you have and for me that's my 14/0...because I don't have a 16/0...yet...but even t
hen I would probably cry a little at the thought of using another big senator besides my 14/0... ![]()

Much Respect To What You Said About Making Others Feel Under Guned, But I Would NEVER FEEL THAT WAY NO MATTER WHAT YOU BRING
I Put 12/0 To The Test And I Know What They Can Do. I've Seen Rene di Dios Bring In Some Massive Hammers & Monster Bulls, And Tigers In On 12/0...Matter Of Fact Slasherx4 12/0 Drag Is So Good I Bet Money He Could Bring In A 15ft Hammer ( Still Green).
